Hacking into the Industry- An Ex Hacker's Point of View

Blog - MyBlog

Growing up, the words hacking and video gaming didn't really fill that persona in my life.  There's people that mod their PS1 to play Japanese games and those that done abnormal things to get a old nes cartridge to work.  Nothing like that hit me until I found out about hacking the psp which is many moons later from a avid retro gamer. The benefits of hacking this system was amazing. It ranged from being able to play retro games on the go to putting all type of video onto the psp, instead of using software. This was like a dream come true to me because I get to show off my skills of being a tech and having a fearless constructable side of me. I remember the day like it was yesterday....

I found out about the infamous "Lumines" hack which was a blessing to not only gamers but to gamestop. My co psp owning classmate was interested in doing the hack but turn it down because of the infamous "bricking" issue that could come out of it. So here I am, sitting down infront of my HP laptop. A PSP 1000 in my hand and lumines in the other, the memory card sits gracefully inside waiting for the verdict. A grueling 30 minutes later.....my 3.40 software is now 1.5...meaning I can pretty much kiss it and it would feel my lips. So I begin putting homebrews and all sorts of gaming goodys on there. This was a blessing in disguise until......I found out that not only nerds and "hardcore" gamers were doing this....but children were apart of this bootleg division of a community. I kinda felt dirty but still eager for that next fix.....The Pandora battery. This amazing 2 piece equipment gave my third psp *long story* a gift of doing its magic again. As time progress I begin to see the wrong doings of this thing called hacking. Children literally swearing that this is the way to go, and clowning Sony to big up its resistance of not buying games to help them make a profit to bring more games to the masses. I was sadden by comments on this ongoing ego driven contest of whose right and wrong....I felt like a pawn in this ordeal. So I basically turn my psp in and avoid such battles.

I eventually went back to the Wii and tried to get back into the game for the sake of testing and trying out. Eventually I notice the slight change in sales because of these actions I've committed and felt that same feeling as I did in 2008. The feeling of this isn't the right thing to do. You have everybody swearing they are a hacker and its ruining the business the way I see it, and will continue to ruin it unless people use the hacks as what they intended to be used for. To test out emulations, to go on youtube on a youtubeless system, to even try out the game you wanna buy or just copy it from either renting it or just buying and selling.

From my perspective as a ex hacker of modding and testing out homebrew, I've come to realize that this is a fad and not something I intended to be proud of. You have people of all ages trying to put the label of being a hacker and wonder why the good ones left. People that made it for convenience and not to be taking advantage of. From handhelds to even consoles this epidemic is getting severe to the point it may even get to a console that's so called hack proof.  I just hope as a exhacker with that technical taste in my mouth that things will change for the homebrew community and not change it for the wrong reasons. One day people will mod a console for what it was meant to be used for not for criminal maliciousness....but then again whats bad is soooooooo good.
